Yani Tseng cruises to a 7-shot victory at the Swinging Skirts 2011 TLPGA Invitational
(December 11, 2011; New Taipei City) The rain finally stopped at the Swinging Skirts 2011 TLPGA Invitational and World number one Yani Tseng became unstoppable. Yani got off to a great start by carding 4 birdies with no dropped shot on the front nine, on her way to a 4-under-par 68 and a three-round aggregate of 210 (-6) for a 7-shot victory over So-Yeon Ryu and Jiyai Shin from South Korea.
The victory in front of 7,500 hometown fans, worth TWD 5 million, is Yani’s 12th win in a break-out year. It is also her 3 wins in as many starts in her homeland of Taiwan. “I never thought I could win 12 times in a season, this is really awesome.”
Yani blows away the field on the front nine
Yani, who is reminiscent of Tiger Woods in his prime, left little doubt that she has this win in her bag from the get go in the final round at the Miramar Golf & Country Club. Yani was almost perfect on the front nine where she reeled in 4 birdies, as her one-shot lead over playing partner Amy Yang of Korea quickly ballooned to 8 at the turn. Amy Yang’s errant iron shot to the rough and the ensuing three-putt on the 9th hole cost her a triple-bogey.
Yani pretty much sealed the victory as she continued her consistent play on the back nine. “It’s been a very long season for me and I am really tired, I will work with my team to adjust my schedule for 2012. I may make fewer starts next year, but it’s still flexible.”
President Ma gives Yani a surprise phone call
In the midst of her post-game press conference, Yani got a surprise phone call from President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan, who congratulated her on her “awesome win”. “ I really admired your ability to keep your composure,” exclaimed Ma.
When asked to grade her own performance for 2011, Yani said she would give herself 88 out of 100 for 2011. “Thanks to outpouring support of the fans, it has been a great season for me. But I think there is always room for improvement.”
Jiyai Shin, the former world number one from Korea, holed out from the fairway on 16th to shoot an eagle 2 to finish the round at 70 and a second-place tie with compatriot So-Yeon Ryu.
“Pink Panther” impressed with Taiwan
Local fans’ favorite Na Yeon Choi shot 73 to finish in the 4th place. Japan’s Mayu Hattori finished in a lone 5th place with a final round of 70. China’s Shanshan Feng, Amy Yang and Beatriz Recari from Spain are tied for the 6th place at 220.
“Pink Panther” Paula Creamer from the US bid goodbye to her legions of fans in Taiwan with a final round of 73 for a total of 224, good for 15th place. Creamer, who was featured as one of the marquee players by the organizers, said she would be happy to come back to Taiwan and promise to pick up more mandarin expressions on her next visit.
